Ziele/Aims Design of a theoretical model that describes a biological phenomenon; theoretical analysis of a mathematical model; implementation and simulation of a model in julia
Inhalte/Content The module is an introduction into modeling of biological systems in ecology, evolution and molecular biology; in particular no prior (mathematical or computational) knowledge is assumed. The goal is to teach the entire process of modeling, i.e., model design, model simulation and model analysis. The choice of a suitable model strongly depends on the biological question that one wants to study. In the module the advantages and disadvantages of different modeling approaches will be taught. Additionally, the students will learn some basic tools to analyze these different types of models. In the accompanying tutorials a special focus will be put on the implementation and simulation of the models (julia, which is python-like, but faster).
Methoden/Methods model design starting from a biological question;
stability analysis of ordinary differential equations (steady states, oscillations, long term behavior);
analysis of structured populations (e.g. space- or age-structured);
evolutionary invasion analyses;
programming in julia
